Reasons to install a water tank

At Aptus Plumbing and Gas we have been watching with interest the looming El Nino cycle that is almost certainly going to be affecting the weather for some time to come. This combined with dropping South East Queensland dams levels has meaning. Water conservation will become an issue.
Will there be a call for Water Tanks?
Anyone who has lived in Brisbane for some time will know that the cycle toward water restrictions occurs from time to time and there is rush to install water tanks, sometimes with a government mandate. We expect to see this again at some point. Brisbane's water "grid" has not been expanded for many years, though connecting dams has created more dynamic in the system. Irrespective of levels, a scarcity of rain and a growing population in the South East Queensland corner is likely to put pressure on water supply. We think that at some point there will be a call and a drive for households to install or upgrade water tanks.
What are the factors to consider when installing a water tank?
A water tank can be a godsend for any property, especially if there are water restrictions. It's not just the capacity, but the amount of roof water collected into your tanks that matters when it starts to rain. There are a few things to consider with maximising your water collection and storage.
The initial placement is a key factor in gaining the best usage from your water tank. To really make the most of any rainfall, place your tank in a position to link up with any steep roofs on your property. This will best utilise the runoff.
You want the runoff to have a clear path. This means ensuring your gutters and pipes are clean and clear. It's important to check them regularly. You might also consider topping up your water tank by adding piping to catch the runoff from other areas. This could include a standalone garage or any other structures on your property.
Naturally, your roof and guttering must be in a good state of repair too.
What do you use water in a water tank for in a normal house?
Something as simple as converting your toilet to flush with rainwater will reduce your town water consumption by up to 60%. Add into that converting your laundry and bathroom taps to use water from the tank, and that number grows to 85%.
