Boondall Residences Are Treating Smelly Drains With A Household Remedy

22 Apr 2020

 by Brett Mulhall

Smelly drains can be a nuisance in any household. While your drain might smell for a variety of reasons, thankfully, our plumbers northside know a simple solution that can resolve the issue in most cases.

The three most common causes of a smelly drain are sewage gas, a build-up of food and other organic material, and mould. Sewage gas is generally routed through the roof, allowing fresh air to enter the home. However, if there is a blockage that stops the P-trap from collecting the sewage gas and blocking the bad smell from escaping into the home, then your drain may begin to reek. Alternatively, it very well may be that food and other organic material has begun to build-up in your pipes, especially as it can be hard to notice small scrapes falling into your drain. What you will notice is the smell of the bacteria attracted to the decomposing food, however, which can cause a particularly smelling drain. Finally, if your drain has a musty smell to it, it is likely caused by mould.  Where there's moisture, there's mould, and the released gasses are quite potent. No matter what's causing the odour, you can rest easy knowing there is an easy way to fix it with this advice from our plumbers Boondall.

To treat a smelly drain, you only need a combination of 3 cups of boiling water, half a cup of baking soda, and one cup of vinegar. First, pour a cup of the boiling water down the drain, allowing the water to loosen any debris from the side of the pipes. Next, pour the half cup of baking soda and let it sit for a moment. After a few minutes have passed, mix one cup of vinegar with one cup of boiling water, pouring the mixture down the drain. At this stage, you will need to quickly cover the drain with a plug or sponge, as the chemical reaction will send the mixture skyward. Once your drain is covered, it is normal to hear a popping or sizzling sound inside. After about 5 to 10 minutes has passed, pour another cup of hot water down the drain, and then repeat this process if necessary.

As our qualified plumbers northside are aware, an odorous drain can be a problem anywhere. To speak to our amazing team of Boondall plumbers, call Aptus Plumbing & Gas on 07 3205 1991.
